Artist Statement

My practice centres on understanding the connections between cultural ideologies and society. I often question how different cultural values and traditions influence individuals and society causing them to behave in certain ways, consciously or unconsciously.  By looking into the variable factors of art-making, such as in the material and environment, I aim to stretch the possibilities of the ways a subject could be portrayed.

I am currently exploring how shame associated with sex and sexual organs can impact one's agency in protecting oneself from inappropriate sexual behaviour, particularly for children. A shameful perceptions of sex is common to many countries and cultures, including my home country, Malaysia. This can lead to victims of sex crime, especially children, not seeking help because of shame, or through insufficient knowledge to identify sex grooming. Perhaps, if we do not label sex topics as shameful, and provide comprehensive sex education to prevent sex grooming, there may be fewer victims of grooming.
